How do consultants work?

When you commission a consultant, he/she will normally spend time with you, initially to agree on:

  • what it is you want done and how it will be conducted;

  • what you will be provided with at specific stages of the assignment (reports, findings, interim recommendations etc);

  • what will be provided to you at the end of the assignment (final report, computer system etc);

  • the time frame of the assignment, including the final objectives and milestones marking completion of agreed stages;

  • the cost and payment schedule.

The consultant will often work closely with you and your staff and implement agreed changes along the way. You will feel confident with the recommendations and have closer control of the project. Alternatively you may prefer that the consultant analyses your needs and provide you with a report and recommendations for you to agree on, or implement at a later stage.
